Charlie,
Thank YOU and so many others on this list who have done, and continue
to do so much and are always "there" when help and advocacy are
needed.  Passage of the bill to be introduced by Sen Specter may be
uphill but this time,  as we know, it's not "just" a Parkinson's bill.
  Also testifying at the hearing on Tuesday was the father of a seven
year old who has diabetes - Dr. Varmus said last month something to
the effect that there isn't an aspect of medicine that won't be
touched by stem cell research.  It includes those who suffer from so
many illnesses and who really cannot be helped beyond a certain point
by drugs - stroke, spinal cord injuries, certain heart conditions,
neurological diseases other than Parkinson's, etc.  The organizations
which focus on finding cures for these diseases will have the
motivation to work independently or collectively, but hopefully,
cooperatively, to secure passage of the Specter bill, and to bring
forward their spokespeople to rally public support - eg. Mary Tyler
Moore (diabetes); Kirk Douglas (stroke); Christopher Reeves (spinal
cord injury).  Newt Gingrich has an interest in diabetes; Mrs. Reagan,
 Alzheimer's, and so on.  The Udall bill was passed; this one will be
too.
