Dear List Members,

I spoke with my parents, both of whom have PD, today, and my mother became
alarmed at one point because my father couldn't get out of his chair. They
live in St. Louis. I live in Massachusetts. He told me recently that he
bought some kind of hydraulic chair lift that has made it easier for him to
get up, but I didn't know if anyone might know of something else that might
help him.

He has a recliner chair that he loves, and he said that everytime he tried
to get up he could feel the chair tipping off balance. My mother can't
help him because she is much more frail than he is and he is the one who
cares for her most of the time. I know that physically he is declining,
not only from PD but also from arthritis.

It sounds like the chair lift may not be enough to help him any longer. I
suggested having a bar installed on the wall next to the chair, but he
didn't think that would help. He is having a bar installed on their bed to
keep him from falling out. I know this is very frightening to them both.
Does anyone know of anything that might help him with this? Have others
had this problem? How did you handle it?

Thanks for any ideas you can share.
