FITNESS COUNTS The National Parkinson Foundation has recently published a revised edition of FITNESS COUNTS, a fifty-eight page , 8 ½ by 11 spiral -bound pamphlet whose theme is that fitness does count toward the goal of improving quality of life for people with Parkinson's disease. Written by two physical therapists, Maria Walde-Douglas and Rose Wichmann, it is by far one of the best NPF publications. Three chapters illustrated with photos and sketches detail a stretching and strengthening exercise program specifically designed for people with PD. Clearly presented are exercises performed from a seated, standing, supine and prone positions. The binding allows the pamphlet to lie flat in an open position making it easier to follow the exercise instructions. More than just an exercise manual, the pamphlet goes on to deal with such topics as techniques for moving between a sitting and standing position, rolling over in bed, and getting in and out of a car. Sprinkled throughout FITNESS COUNTS are suggestions and advice for care partners. It also briefly deals with safety and comfort modification around the house, physical and occupational therapy, massage, and Tai Chi, and ends with advice on how to choose a wheelchair. A toll free phone call to the National Parkinson Foundation at 1-800-327-4545 will get you a copy of this first-rate publication. ------------ Sid Roberts 69/4 Youngstown,Ohio
