Actually Russ et al.,

 I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I customarily use a
program called Hot Metal Pro 4.  It functions so that you can see the
markup or not - usually best to use it with - and it essentially does all
the inserting for you, once you know the 'cues' .  I also am self taught,
so it can't be THAT hard to learn!!  My work is essentially net based, so I
use it as it were Word Perfect or Windows most of the time.

You might even be able to get a trial version for free off the net.  The
parent company is called Softquad, and as a note of interest, I even think
that they might be a bit Canadian!!   again, it might not be perfectly
suited, but worth a try, I would say.
