1999/03/11: Vancouver: Murray Martin, President, Vancouver Hospital & Health Sciences Centre and Dr. David McLean, Vice-President, Research are pleased to offer congratulations to Dr. Donald Calne on his recent naming as Officer of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Calne received his medical education at Oxford and later served as Clinical Director and Chief of Experimental Therapeutics at the National Institutes of Health, Bethseda, Maryland.

Currently he is Director of the Neurodegenerative Disorders Ccntre at the University of British Columbia Hospital, a site of the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre.

His main research contributions have been in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

He has published over 500 papers and chapters on neurological subjects, edited eight books on degenerative disease of the brain and three books on neurology for scientists and physicians.

Currently, Dr. Calne chairs the Medical Advisory Board of the Parkinson Foundation of Canada and will, later this year, chair the International Congress on Parkinson's Disease of the World Federation of Neurology.

1999 will also see the publication of his book, 'Within Reason', designed for non-scientific readers.

Vancouver Hospital is one of Canada's largest teaching and research-focused institutions with four sites, an annual budget of $510M, 8500 staff and 750 affiliated physicians.
