judith richards cites an article by Lisa Richwine:

>WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Health, consumer and environmental groups will
>ask the federal government Tuesday to stop farmers feeding animals
>antibiotics that are losing their power to treat infections in people.
Etc.

The use of antibiotics as preventives and growth when mixed in feeds of
farm animals was discussed well over 30 years ago when they found that
bacteria were becoming resistant to the antibiotics. But the hue and
cry of the farmers were too much and the administration relented.
...and the question keep surging as the problems involving non
therapeutic use of antibiotics grow bigger. Incidentally, similar
problems also stem from the illegal use of steroids in farm animals
occasionally resulting in human consumption of tainted meats.
