Suggest you consult with a Urologist who specializes in Neurological problems. There are drugs that can help such as Detrol/Detrusitol(See files below). Consider using protective pads, diapers, and other aids. Unlike other anticholinergics, such as oxybutanin, tolterodine is what urologist call the "laser beam" rather than the "shot gun" approach to treating overactive bladder. Overactive bladder could be a miriad of symptoms. Those can be urinary frequency (more than 8 micturitions in a 24 hr period, including getting up more than once at night. Urgency, feeling like you have to go all the time, not to be confused with urinary tract infection, but similar in symptoms. Urge Incontinence, uncontrolable voiding necessitating the need for diapers. Detrol is not indicated for Stress Incontinence, such as urinating while sneezing, coughing or laughing (and I hope you can still laugh!), but can help with mixed etiologies. Detrol is taken 2mg, twice a day and the side effects are virtually nothing when compared to what is available right now. Another added benefit is it can be taken with any other medication without side effects or interactions with your currents meds. Overactive bladder is very easy to diagnos with a good patient history and ruling out UTI and BPH which can mask symptoms. Although there is no cure, this is the next best thing. Hope this helps! This is a new drug,so the package insert tells only about the side effects experienced in the trials, and there was nothing there that seemed bad. However, as Peter too two pills a day for a week it was clear he was worse--more OFF times, little On--unsteady, even fall once (landed on my lap!) and was mentally slow and confused. He even began to have early stage hallucinations,e.g. the "sense" of a "presence" --his father or brother standing behind his chair...I reached the neuro when there was one pill left, and he said stop! He added that as the drug was so new there was no real clinical experience to go by, and it seemed likely that the Detrol had caused Peter's downward slide...watch for a week without it, and call him. Well, three days later, there is definite improvement! WHEW!!! No more "presences", back to where he was before with mobility and feeling so much more like himself. This is a "cautionary tale", I guess, about new drugs and unknown interactions, and how a med that works well for some of us may be disastrous for others---just be aware and take care! > Camilla Flintermann, CG for Peter, 80/9 <[log in to unmask]>
