FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Sue Laux, Chicago Area Chapter/APDA 312/664-3880 Young-Onset Parkinson Disease Program in OakBrook. IL Last November Michael J. Fox announced that he had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for the past seven years. The world was shocked, saddened and also enlightened by his announcement. His announcement awakened the medical community as well as the lay public to the knowledge that Parkinson's Disease does, indeed, occur in the under-50 population. On Saturday, May 1, 1999, the Chicago Area Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association will present an educational symposium for patients and their family members who want to learn more about young-onset Parkinson's Disease. The keynote speaker will be Michael Rezak, MD, Ph.D., a prominent neurologist and movement disorders specialist, who will speak on the latest treatments for Parkinson's Disease. In addition, Susan Reese, RN, LCSW, Director of the American Parkinson Disease Association's Information and Referral Center will speak on "Young and Living Well with Parkinson's Disease." Parkinson's Disease, a chronic neurodegenerative disorder, affects about 1.5 million people in the United States. Primary symptoms may include stiffness of limbs, rigidity, tremors and slowness of movements. Although estimates vary, it is thought that about 15-20% of patients experience symptoms before the age of 50. Approximately 10% of that group are under 40 years of age. The symposium will be held at the Oak Brook Hills Resort Center on May 1, 1999, from 9:00 AM-12:00 noon. A complimentary continental breakfast will be provided. The program is free, but pre-registration is required. For information or registration call the Chicago Area Chapter at 312-664-3880. ###
