Billie, I had this exam a few years ago. It's not bad at all. The throat is sprayed with an anesthetic and the gag reflex soon disappears, to allow the tube to pass through without discomfort to you. After the exam, the reflex soon returns and swallowing resumes, probably within the hour. Good luck, Billie. Clare Wilson
