I used to work with several forms of research in labs across the country.
Progress was made by teams of laboratory directors, technicians and
collaborators, statisticians and so many more. It is expensive to
pursue each step of a process that may be the only one in existence.
I was fortunate to work for a director that thought deeply about
what she was trying to prove. Each experiment and article read was
a piece to a huge jigsaw puzzle with lots of gaps.

It was a struggle to fund research. We ran a clinical lab to help fund
the research... it at least put the facilities in place (microscopes,
incubators, centrifuges, etc...--and salaries).
Grants were constantly being applied for, sometimes for "trendy" uses
that would provide "cash flow" by being funded more readily, but, still
take things forward in general. Articles were always in the process
of being written. Graduate students did a lot
when paid techs weren't available (tied up with other work). One
grad student set up her desk in the hallway(and got work published).

I think it is important to fund the folks with strong determination.
Throwing money at a problem may not solve it, but, there are labs
out there that need it and have something to prove.

Serendipity requires something to be happening...and then someone
sharp enough to recognize it.

I'm ready too.
Going "off" for now.
