Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City to Host Largest Exhibition of Authentic
Titanic Artifacts This Summer
Titanic: The Experience,' The Only Exhibition in the United States
Featuring
Artifacts Recovered from Titanic's Wreck Site, to be Presented by RMS
Titanic,
Inc. From May 29th to September 7th
NEW YORK, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- RMS Titanic, Inc. (OTC Bulletin
Board: SOST) and the Tropicana Casino and Resort announced today that
the world's largest exhibition of Titanic artifacts will be presented
exclusively at the Tropicana from May 29, 1999 through September 7,
1999. "Titanic: The Experience" is the only exhibition in the United
States scheduled for this summer which will feature artifacts recovered
from the depths of Titanic's wreck site, 2 1/2 miles below the surface
of the North Atlantic.
"Nothing of this magnitude has ever come to Atlantic City, " said Dennis
Gomes, President of Tropicana's Resort Operations. "We are pleased to
host this one-of-a-kind cultural, historical and educational experience
at the Tropicana. Visitors to Titanic: The Exhibition will be able to
walk through a historic 'moment in time,' seeing these emotionally
powerful and thought- provoking artifacts recovered from the world's
most famous ship, while appreciating the science and technology which
have allowed the recovery and preservation of the Titanic's artifacts."
Throughout the exhibition, Titanic's artifacts will be intertwined with
full sensory displays that place the relics in a context to convey the
experience of those aboard Titanic. A featured element of the exhibition
will be the "Big Piece" -- a 20-ton, 26 foot by 20 foot section of
Titanic's outer hull -- that was recovered from the debris field
surrounding Titanic's wreck during RMS Titanic, Inc.'s 1998 expedition
to the Titanic last August.
"Titanic: The Experience" brings back to life the unforgettable tale of
the world's most famous maritime disaster, from the grandeur and
spectacle of her design, to the personal stories of her passengers, to
the tragic night of April 14, 1912, and to her subsequent discovery and
the recovery of her artifacts on the ocean floor. Visitors to the
exhibition will be able to re- live her mighty construction, preparation
for sailing, launching and final farewells, while experiencing the human
stories behind the artifacts recovered from Titanic, 2 1/2 miles beneath
the ocean's surface. At the center of the exhibition, visitors will have
the rare opportunity to view Titanic as if they were part of an
expedition team as they examine a 30 foot-long model of the Titanic
wreck. The exhibition also includes an 18 foot model of the Titanic as
she set sail, and a display of the state-of-the-art technology and
deep-sea equipment used in the recovery of the artifacts.
In addition to the "Big Piece," which will be displayed immersed in
water as its conservation work continues, "Titanic: The Experience" will
also include the bronze cherub from the ship's grand staircase, the
ship's main whistles, a port hole with glass intact possibly from
Titanic's First-Class dining room, the ship's navigational bridge
telegraph used to communicate the ship's speed from officers to the
engine room, a 1,000 pound davit from which a life boat from the ship
was lowered, a gilt chandelier, an unknown passenger's suit of clothes,
eyeglasses in their case, a corked champagne bottle, an unopened bottle
of olives, sheet music with its stand, a ship's purser's valise, a
steward's jacket, silver dinnerware, fine china, gold coins, jewelry,
and delicate paper objects such as a stock certificate and personal
letters.
"The story of Titanic has a captivating and emotional effect on all of
us," said George Tulloch, President of RMS Titanic, Inc. "Through
viewing these objects recovered from the wreck of Titanic, together with
the sights and sounds of the multimedia displays, abstract thoughts
about Titanic become concrete, and the viewer is able to feel and
experience a sense of the reality of this profound tragedy in a very
personal and individual way," he said.
The efforts of RMS Titanic, Inc., in its capacity as exclusive salvor of
the wreck of the Titanic, prevents plundering of the wreck site for
private individual gain. In a June 1998 ruling, the Court commended the
company for "maximizing the wreck's historical value and returning the
wreck's artifacts to society for the general use and education of all
mankind." During the years 1998, 1996, 1994, 1993 and 1987, research and
recovery expeditions conducted by RMS Titanic, Inc. have recovered
approximately 5,000 artifacts from the Titanic wreck site.
More than 4,000,000 people have attended exhibitions of the company's
Titanic artifacts throughout the world in venues such as St. Paul,
Minnesota; Zurich, Switzerland; Tokyo and other cities in Japan; Boston,
Massachusetts; Hamburg, Germany; St. Petersburg, Florida; Memphis,
Tennessee and at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.

RMS Titanic, Inc. was granted salvor-in-possession rights to the wreck
of the Titanic by a United States Federal Court order in 1994,
reconfirmed again in
1996. The court award includes the exclusive rights to own objects
recovered from the Titanic wreck site. The United States Federal Court
recognized that RMS Titanic, Inc. has taken responsibility for the
historical preservation of the wreck through its conservation of
recovered artifacts and its commitment to keep the artifacts together as
a collection for public exhibition, without sale to private collectors.
