Well, as a certified old fart at Inkshed, I have one thought: one of the central things that makes Inkshed what it is is its deep non- or inter-disciplinarity. I was talking with someone over a meal -- probably in response to a question from Tania -- and was trying to make clear how important I think it is that part of the reason Inkshed is so open is that we come from wildly different institutional / professional contexts, so we check all the disciplinary baggage at the door; another part is that most of us are in some way or another marginalized at "home" (writing centres aren't exactly where it's at in English; nor is rhetoric; nor is pedagogy). Other conferences I like have something of the same character -- STLHE and IGEL, for instance, have both characteristics. Both considerations make a refereed journal a profoundly difficult undertaking, both in terms of funding and in terms of producing refereeable articles (look at the trouble _TSC_ -- which just arrived, by the way) has generating enough articles to fill an annual. That's not because we have nothing to say, but because we really don't have -- and don't, I'd suggest, really want -- a discipline supporting us. -- Russ __|~_ Russell A.
