NIH PONDERS ONLINE DISTRIBUTION OF RESEARCH FINDINGS
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is considering a proposal to
disseminate research papers by biomedical scientists who have received
agency funding. Bypassing print journals could save "millions of dollars"
says NIH director Harold Varmus. The proposal is still in the embryonic
stage, but NIH officials say they may incorporate some type of online peer
review into the electronic publication process. Proponents of the plan
say
the move to e-publishing is inevitable: "Sending atoms of wood pulp
through
the postal system is pretty cumbersome compared with sending bits over the
Net," says Bruce Dan, a former editor of the Journal of the American
Medial
Association. (Chronicle of Higher Education 7 May 99)
