National Parkinson Foundation Forms 'Alliance to Cure Parkinson's
Disease' with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

MIAMI, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Following meetings of representatives of
the National Parkinson Foundation and the Department of Veterans Affairs
the two organizations have agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding that
will establish the ``National Parkinson Foundation-Department of
Veterans Affairs Alliance to Cure Parkinson's Disease'' An official
signing ceremony has been set for 1:00 p.m., June 1, 1999 at the
Department of Veterans Affairs headquarters in Washington, DC.

Signing on behalf for the National Parkinson Foundation will be Nathan
Slewett, Chairman of the National Parkinson Foundation Board of
Directors. In anticipation of the historic signing, Mr. Slewett said,
``This working
agreement between the National Parkinson Foundation and the Department
of Veterans Affairs, marks the beginning of a constructive alliance
between a federal agency and a private voluntary health foundation that
offers
real hope to solving the remaining medical mysteries of Parkinson's
disease as well as improving the treatment of Parkinson patients who are
a part of the Veterans Health Service. I am truly grateful that the
National Parkinson
Foundation is a partner in this endeavor.''

Although the full text of the agreement will be released in a joint
statement by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National
Parkinson Foundation, the scope of the Memorandum of Understanding
includes the provision of CME training for physicians, employed by the
Veterans Health Service who treat patients with Parkinson Disease. It
also includes the development of symposia which will focus on advances
in the understanding and treatment of Parkinson's disease targeted to
VHS professionals, provision for public dissemination of information on
Parkinson's disease research and treatment programs of the VHS, and
collaboration on research strategies that offer promise of new therapies
that will lead to improved treatments and eventually the cure for
Parkinson's disease.

Founded in 1957 and headquartered in Miami, Florida, the National
Parkinson Foundation is the largest organization serving people with
Parkinson's disease and their families throughout the world.
