Before this "Nasty airports I have known" thread dies (or is killed by the all powerful 'enough already') I thought I'd get my entry in. Luanda Airport (Angola) 1971 1st sight - look out of window as plane lands to see runway lined with armoured cars. exit aircraft through a corridor of soldiers armed with 'Uzis'. walk across tarmac to the bus in 90 degree heat and 80 degree humidity. It is 1 o'clock in the wee small hours of the morning. enter the terminal building to find it is under construction and the transit lounge is up a wide sweeping flight of raw concrete stairs which rise out off the middle of the lobby. the stairs have no rails. Find that the transit lounge is a large room with no seating and a counter made of planks laid across 44 gallon drums. A single armed soldier serves behind the counter. The ' toilets' comprise 2 bare rooms which will be ready "in a few weeks time". retrace steps to aircraft get away - never to return.
