Thank you to all who responded to my message regarding "Persistent Abnormal
Smells." When I wrote for help I tried to keep it short but unfortunately I
made it sound as though my neurologist did not know that abnormal smells
could be associated with PD. I should have gone into more detail and I
apologize for any misunderstanding. My doctor has been specializing in PD
for the last 10 years. He is the principal investigator for the
double-blind , multicentre study that I am participating in. I should have
said that at my last doctor's appointment in April I was unable to get any
written information about this problem from him but hopefully he will have
something for me by the end of June when I see him again. The CAT scan,
x-ray and other tests that I had were done about 1 1/2 years ago by an ENT
specialist.

In early May we started receiving the newsletters and other booklets from
the Parkinson's Disease Foundation and at that time we saw the article
"What's that Smell?" from "Mary's Mailbag" and also noticed the Listserv
e-mail address. As I have had this problem for 2 1/2 years and have
exhausted all environmental causes, I have been most anxious to find a way
to resolve it. After finding out that it indeed could be a part of having
PD, I have been exploring other resources. Through Listserv I was hoping
that I could find others who have the same problem and could share their
experiences with me. The odor I smell is very chemical and almost toxic to
me and is very bad the majority of the time. Through your replies, it was
reassuring that I am not alone in this and glad to hear that some of you are
not bothered with the odor any longer. I hope it will eventually leave me
too.

My 84 year old father was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease 12 years ago
and is not doing well. It has been very hard for us as a family to see the
disease progress and to watch how it has taken control of his body. His
mind is sharp and he still has a sense of humor.

We pray that through these research studies there will be new medications
and a cure for this disease.

Thank you again for all your feedback and I wish you all well. You are all
in our prayers. Again, please except my apologies for any
misunderstandings.
