What happens,IF you have a virus detection program loaded.

When you access the e-mail, the virus protection program will notify you
that the message has an infection. It will then ask you what you want to
do...delete - clean   If you choose the "Clean" option, it will clean the
e-mail to where you can read it, the confusion here is that it cleans the
temporary file that the system opens for you to read but does not actually
clean the e-mail message itself. The best advice is that if the virus
protection program detects a virus is to delete the message and notify the
sender.

So, no, the virus programs do not clean e-mail. But they can/do notify you
if a message has an infection before you open it and possibly prevent the
infection of your machine.
