Dear Listfriends-- As one of the "offenders" who was somewhat dismissive of earlier silly threads but was drawn into the Parkinsaw saga and the Perils of Yugoman, I have for some time wondered when or whether there would be those who found it all too inconsequential and just plain annoying. I'm NOT at all surprised that such feelings have surfaced, as among the 1800 of us, there are sure to be such differences. Not everyone has time or inclination to read long lists of "internet jokes" OR very technical medical research reports, for that matter. I HAVE been a bit surprised that several folks have put in a plug for the lighter stuff--and glad if it has helped to distract momentarily from the painful preoccupations of PD. More than once I have considered asking whether we should have a "private" little Parkinsaw Pig list on which any who were interested could be included, but which would not "trouble" the main list with our silliness. In considering this idea I have recalled several times in the past years when the subject of dividing the list into "serious" and "not serious" threads has been proposed, roundly discussed, and eventually rejected ! I also realized that the Pig/Yugo stuff, which began with maybe 3 people (thanks, John Bjork!) has elicited amused and amusing responses for a good many more over the time it has been running. I would have hated not to hear from all of them, even if only once or twice. The bottom line, I now think, is that we must be VERY clear about our NON-PD subject headings, and I think we've all tried to remember that. Also, people need to be aware that subject headings DO describe content, and that if they see NON-PD Parkinsaw, etc, they can feel free to delete/skip/ignore, whatever, without worrying about missing vital medical information. If email programs provide a way to filter posts, please make use of them, and save yourselves some aggravation. AOL may not do it, but I think many others do, and if you query the list there will surely be someone glad to "mentor" you through the filtering process. .
