FDA To Study Whether Clozapine Can Cause Diabetes WESTPORT, Jul 14 (Reuters Health) - Data presented at The Endocrine Society meeting, held recently in San Diego, suggest that the antipsychotic agent clozapine (Clozaril) may cause new-onset diabetes mellitus. Dr. Elizabeth Koller, of the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation & Research, Rockville, Maryland, reported that she and associates at the Center have gathered data on 205 cases of onset or exacerbation of diabetes in clozapine-treated patients. In a telephone interview after the meeting, Dr. Koller told Reuters Health that the first published report she saw caught her attention because "...the presentation was unusual--the age of the patient and the severity of the hyperglycemia." From MEDLINE, Dr. Koller and her colleagues retrieved a total of 11 similar published case reports of clozapine-associated diabetes involving 18 patients. They identified 124 additional cases by reviewing reports that were submitted to the FDA MedWatch surveillance program between 1993 and 1998. <SNIP> http://ipn.intelihealth.com/ipn/ihtIPN?c=232989 -- Judith Richards, London, Ontario, Canada [log in to unmask] ^^^ \ / \ | / Today’s Research \\ | // ...Tomorrow’s Cure \ | / \|/ ```````
