my father had tremendous success with the "StepOver Cane" with the little red adjustable "line" at the end of the cane - may be used with either left or right handed users PLUS put straight up when not needed - in addition to the tapping method mentioned previously, my father and i were pleased with the success of the following: PWP is frozen PWP must remember that the BRAIN must initiate the movement before the body responds so. . . IF ALONE: * PWP looks down at feet, then out at where they're going * Do several times until reinforcing where they're going * PWPbegins the "mantra": left, right, left, over left, right, left, over (when saying 'over', PWP must be looking at feet and find ANYTHING that may be used as the obstacle to get 'over' (like the red line or laser pointer) - it can be a break in the carpet/tile, crack in the sidewalk, gum on the sidewalk, or drop something in front of you - ANYTHING to get 'over') * Continue repeating left, right, left, over try to get some sort of rhythm going, either by tapping, rocking, utilizing a metronome - ANYTHING that will encourage the brain to think NOW!!!!! and that foot WILL swing OVER - during an "ON" phase - it shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes at the most - during an "OFF" phase - try to realize that you're "OFF" and do not exhaust yourself - just get to a place and rest - IF WITH SOMEONE: * same process as above, but the companion assists by tapping shoulders while PWP is saying LRL * i don't want to confuse anybody, but while PWP is saying LEFT, companion gently pushes the right shoulder TOWARDS the LEFT and says left - * while saying RIGHT, companion gently pushes the LEFT shoulder TOWARDS the RIGHT and says right - can anyone else confirm this? cari daughter of. . .
