More federal money to study Parkinson's disease

VANCOUVER (CP) - A group of researchers at the University of British
Columbia has been awarded a $6.8-million federal grant to study Parkinson's
disease.

Federal Health Minister Allan Rock said today the Liberal government will
more than double its funding commitment for Parkinson's research.
Dr. Donald Calne and 13 others at the university will use the money for six
related projects aimed at improving the lives of those with the disease.
The team will collaborate with researchers in Britain, Japan, Germany and
the United States.

About 80,000 Canadians suffer from Parkinson's, a neurological illness that
causes tremors and loss of muscle control.

Rock made the funding announcement to kick off an international congress on
the disease being held in Vancouver this week.
