I've only seen it twice in fifteen years as a Psych-Mental nurse, but here goes. The patient starts running a high fever, becomes delirious (which is difficult to distinguish from psychosis),becomes very rigid, and appears very ill, with elevated vital signs, etc. It is somewhat rare and very complicated. Best description of NMS I've come across is the University of Iowa's VIRTUAL HOSPITAL'S "Clinical Pharmacology Seminar 1996-1997", which is extremely informative: http://www.vh.org/Providers/Conferences/CPS/09.html Carole H. --- janet paterson <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > hi all > > At 10:28 1999/07/29 EDT, patty wrote: > >Carol, > >What is Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome? > > i'd like to hear a description of this as well > > it's been mentioned as a possible risk > caused by too-fast withdrawal of tasmar [tolcapone] > in the warnings supplied by the manufacturer > hoffman-roche > but i've been having a bit of trouble finding a > clear definition of it > other than it's dangerous and potentially fatal > > janet > > janet paterson > 52 now / 41 dx / 37 onset > snail-mail: PO Box 171 Almonte Ontario K0A 1A0 > Canada > website: a new voice > <http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Village/6263/> > e-mail: <[log in to unmask]> > _____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
