There may be CASLL folks who remember Jim -- he was important, in a kind of roundabout way, to the beginning of Inkshed. Jim Reither was powerfully influenced by his work. -- Russ ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 16:26:56 -0700 Subject: in memory of james kinneavy To: [log in to unmask] From: [log in to unmask] (Rosa A. Eberly) Dr. James L. Kinneavy died August 10, 1999, in Seton Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Edgewater, Colorado, on June 26, 1920, the son of James Kinneavy and the former Teresa Peila. The first of five children, he was followed by John (1921), Kathleen (1923), Clifford (1925), and Bernard (1926). Because of the death of his mother at age 33 in 1927, he and the other children were raised in orphanages, the boys at St. Vincent's home, and Kathleen at Queen of Heaven. After the eighth grade, James joined the preparatory seminary of the Christian Brothers, a teaching order of the Catholic Church, which he officially entered in 1937, and in which he taught first in elementary schools and later in secondary schools in the New Orleans-Santa Fe province of the Christian Brothers for several years. In 1950, he received his M.A. in English from the Catholic University of America and his Ph.D. in 1956. He then taught at the Christian Brothers' College in Santa Fe. After leaving the order of Christian Brothers in 1957, he taught at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, before joining the faculty in 1963 at The University of Texas at Austin, where he remained in a variety of capacities including the Director of the Freshman English Program and Director of the Graduate Rhetoric Program in English. He retired from the University of Texas in 1996, after 55 years of classroom instruction. Dr. Kinneavy was the recipient of many honors, including the Jane and Roland Blumberg Centennial Professorship of English from 1983 until his retirement and an honorary Doctorate at St. Edward's University in 1980. He also received the highest honors that his college and major professional organization bestow: The Pro Bene Meritis Award from the College of Liberal Arts at Texas and the Exemplar Award from the Conference on College Composition and Communication. Dr. Kinneavy is highly respected as a professional educator who directed innumerable students in their doctoral dissertations. He was the author of nine books in the field of rhetoric and composition, most notably: _A Theory of Discourse_ and _Greek Rhetorical Origins of the Christian Faith._ As he approached his ninth decade, Dr. Kinneavy continued to lecture, write, and remain actively involved in the profession he so loved. It is no exaggeration to say that he devoted a significant part of his life to helping others. He was always there for his family, friends, colleagues, and strangers, and this memory of selfless living and unconditional love is his living legacy. Dr. Kinneavy's memorial service will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel at St. Edward's University on August 14 at noon. A University remembrance will also be held in his honor at The University of Texas on August 27. Dr. Kinneavy is survived by his wife, Gloria, and his two daughters, Janice Lynn Kinneavy of Austin and Kathleen Kinneavy Druian of Houston, as well as Kathleen's husband, Scott Druian, and a granddaughter, Alexandra Grace Druian. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kinneavy Memorial Fund, Office of the Dean, College of Liberal Arts, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, 78712-1105. __|~_ Russell A.
