Thanks, Jamie, for the poem. It will definitely find its way into the next issue of the Inkshed newsletter. In fact, so far, it's the only sure thing... In fact, I'm writing to solicit another contribution for the upcoming (late Oct.?) newsletter, which I hope to focus on the intersections between the business and academic world in the realm of writing instruction. Given your unique position, I thought that you might have some reflections to contribute. So far, I've asked Susan Logie from the Carleton Univ. Writing Consultants to submit a piece describing and reflecting on their service, and I've asked Cathy Schryer to consider writing a piece on lessons learned from the now defunct Centre for Professional Writing at the University of Waterloo. Part of my motivation for wanting to focus on this issue is purely selfish: our incoming Dean has indicated that she'd like to see our writing program develop a series of business writing workshops that we can take off the shelf and offer upon request to business organizations in the community. I'm becoming increasingly cynical about the commodification of writing instruction within such a model, yet one-off workshops seem to be what businesses think they need and want, which begs the question of whether they work. BTW, I saw your former colleague, Graham, in July at Purdue University, where he seems quite happily settled in. He was preparing to fly off to Tokyo and then on to Australia, if I recall correctly. I was at Purdue for a four-day workshop followed by a three-day conference for writing program administrators. All in all, an excellent experience. (It was also a week in which I developed a fondness for Killian's Irish Red...) Hope you're having a good summer!
