Welcome!

You have joined the PARKINSN mailing list also known as the Parkinson
Information Exchange Network [PIEnet].

Please send a message to the list members (if you want to) introducing
yourself and any Parkinson's-related topics you would like.

Let me introduce myself. I am a secretary for six faculty members in
the School of Nursing, McMaster University. In September, 1992, I was
diagnosed as having Parkinson's ... hence my interest in this list.

I hope you enjoy your involvement with the PIEnet.

Barb

how to join
how to subscribe to the PIEnet listserv mailing list

To subscribe, send this 'command' message:
    SUBSCRIBE PARKINSN YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME

E-mail all 'command' messages to the listserv computer at:
     [log in to unmask]

After you confirm your subscription by return e-mail, you will
start receiving messages as they are posted to the PIEnet.

here's a sample 'i want to subscribe' message:

here are some tips

* The "To" Header: The listserv has two addresses:
the List Address: use [log in to unmask]
for messages to the PARKINSN list-members; and
the Command Address: use [log in to unmask]
  for commands to the LISTSERV computer;
incredible as it might sound, it's easy to mix them up...

* The "Subject" Header: This header (and anything typed in it) is
  ignored by the listerv computer.

* The "Body" of the Message: This is where the listserv computer
looks for 'commands' in very specific nerd-lingo.

how to talk to the cyber-server
how to change your subscription options

There are various options which can change the way your subscription
is managed. There are specific words aka 'commands' that the listserv
computer will recognize and respond to.

All 'commands' to the computer should be in the 'body' section of your
e-mail message. The 'subject header' is ignored by the listserv.

Since the listserv computer at the University of Toronto manages several
mailing lists, all commands affecting your subscription must include the
name of our mailing list too.

The listserv name for the PIEnet is PARKINSN [not PARKINSON)
[the O was stolen by malicious hackers].

The Command Address for sending a 'command' to the LISTSERV computer is:
     [log in to unmask]

To request a descriptive summary list of the 'commands' that the listserv
recognizes, send the following 'command' message:
     HELP

To find out what your subscription options currently are:
    QUERY PARKINSN

To change your subscription options to receive the digest format
[i.e. two or three 'lumps' of collected mail per day rather than
individual messages - possibly more convenient but less timely]:
    SET PARKINSN DIGEST

To change your subscription setting back to individual messages:
    SET PARKINSN NODIGEST

To stop the incoming mail temporarily:
(for vacations, etc, - this means that you 'miss out' on the pd listmail
during your vacation but if you want to 'catch up' on what you've missed
you can always request old messages from the listserv]
     SET PARKINSN NOMAIL

To resume incoming mail:
     SET PARKINSN MAIL

To stop incoming mail permanently and to terminate your subscription:
     SIGNOFF PARKINSN

how to talk to us cyber-siblings
how to post a message to all of us listmembers

After you have subscribed to the PIEnet, to post a 'public' message
for all the other subscribers to read, type your message in the
'body' area and fill in the 'subject line' with a brief description
of your topic.

E-mail all 'public' messages to the listserv computer at:
     [log in to unmask]

Hello Everyone;

I have just joined the PIEnet and want to thank
Barbara Patterson for setting up this great resource,
and also the University of Toronto for hosting the list
and the archives rent-free.

More later.

* The "Subject" Header: This header might be the most important of
all; with e-mail volume on the list growing slowly but steadily,
a clear but concise description of what your message is all
about, only makes for good 'netiquette'!

* The "Body" of the Message: This space available! The only rule
here, according to the powers that be, is that personal attacks on
[or 'flames'] other listmembers could be cause for banishment.

* A "Signature": This is a feature available on most e-mail software
programs, and is completely optional for PIEnet members. (Some
listmembers - not mentioning any names - find it handy if the
message sender's e-mail address is included at the end of their
  message.)
