i'm in the middle of taking a count
of all messages processed today and yesterday
but in the meantime
as i recall from my aolian days
the aol system was frequently or sometimes even mostly hours behind
the rest of the cyber world in message transporting time

eg
a reply to a simple command to listserv usually takes seconds or minutes
but in my aolian days, it could take minutes or more likely hours

i always wondered where the messages went
while they were killing time....
