Arthur C. Clark wrote in his book " Lost Worlds of 2001" that the HAL/IBM relationship was purley accidental. Hal is actually the acronim for " Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer. Hal and I share the same month and day of birth. He was born on January 12th 1997.
