all i know for sure, dan
is that it's a type of encoding used in e-mail

my email software eudora gives me a choice of mime or binhex encoding
for attachments - and i believe that binhex is primarily mac-oriented

it's the type of thing that the LISTSERV software detects automatically;
if you send a request for the digest option on your subscription,
LISTSERV can determine whether your e-mail software can handle
MIME format digests [ = is MIME compliant]
and sends the digest out in the appropriate format.

for whatever it's worth
i had a quick dig in the wwweb
and came up with this wwweb page:

MIME Overview
<http://www.mindspring.com/~mgrand/mime.html>

and a quote from same:
"MIME is an acronym for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.
It builds on the older standard by standardizing additional fields
for mail message headers that describe new types of content and
organization for messages. "

isn't modern technology grand?
