Ida, Erika, Kees, et al.... A note to whichever one of ya who said that (paraphrasing) At first the PWP having a pallidotomy will feel euphoric, then feel not so good, and then will feel sort of better (errrr... maybe I should have done a direct quote?). Speaking ONLY from my own experience, I had a unilateral (one side only-type) pallidotomy on Oct. 24, 1994, with outstanding success. During the ensuing five years my RIGHT side has been functioning at about 98% of normal. Mind you, the PD is now developing on my primary side - the left side - externally and internally, but had I not had the pallidotomy when I did, I'd be troubled by having BOTH hands and legs being dysfunctional as the left-side-symptoms creep up on me. I might add, the internal symptoms I've developed - breathing, speaking, eyes pulling outward, concentration (as in lack-of) etc.., started about a year post-pallidotomy and since I've had PD for almost 25 years, and am familiar with many of the nuances of this hateful disease, I do NOT attribute these symptoms to the pallidotomy. They're classified under the category of "With PD, SH*T HAPPENS," as far as I'm concerned.<sigh> Sooooo... in my opinion, one should expect the best prior to having a pallidotomy, and hopefully that's what they'll get!
