Dear List: This posting disturbs me. I hope that people don't try such experimentation on their own. Before I decided to post a response, I went to Dr. Lieberman and asked what he thought about this and he reinforced what I already thought. He said that he was not sure how effective the medication would be when delivered in this fashion. I asked about potential sinus infections from this as well and he said that yes, infections could occur, but not only that, the levodopa can be very caustic to the nasal mucosa, burn, and may end up destroying the mucosa. This could potentially lead to a perforation of the nasal septum, and as any of us can imagine, that would be very painful. Before any members of the list prepare their medications this way, please discuss it with your doctor. I know it is desirable to bypass all the problems associated with taking Sinemet orally, but I would hate to think that someone ends up with other problems because they took their medication in an un-intended, unconventional route. Please let your doctors practice medicine...they are the ones with knowledge and are educated to do so. If you are uncomfortable with what your doctor orders or with the treatment that is recommended, it's time to seek treatment from another doctor. Load into two metering = nasal sprayers. I have used sprayers ranging from 0.1 milliliter/spray = to 0.3 milliliter/spray. I have used doses from 1 spray/nostril to 3 spr= ays per nostril -- giving my skull circulating system access to levodopa = quantities ranging from 0.2 milligrams to 1.8 milligrams Why -- these snorts give me quick, non-intestinal tract access to my beloved dopamine precursor that overrides the food amino acids that = are competing with it ; eliminate some carbidopa from my drug mix; and = provide some supplemental levodopa in times of stress.
