Here it is again, without the 'non-pd' in the subject line ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 14:01:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Barbara Patterson <[log in to unmask]> To: parkinsn <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Spin (off) City - An invitation to SPARKLE & CARE, etc Hi,all...I haven't been reading my email much since about Thursday. One of the faculty for whom I work has a 4-day workshop to conduct in Sweden and discovered that the overheads she thought were acceptable for use there were not, so I've been working on them both at the office and at home. So, if any of our members in Sweden are attending a workshop re Problem-based Learning, take note of the superb overheads and handouts... done by one pwp! :) -- I have been asked by some members to comment on the latest list 'heated discussion' about SPARKLE. I think SPARKLE is a great idea! I had been very concerned about the volume of email this list generates and, as you all know, I don't want ANYONE'S voice silenced. The quality of the humour on the list is excellent and the people involved in it were so obviously enjoying themselves, (and others enjoyed reading it) that it seemed a shame to have it stopped. It's sometimes difficult to find anything amusing about pd so many of us really enjoy the occasional silliness. So, having SPARKLE as a sub-list to PARKINSN has really given us the best of both worlds. Subscribe to SPARKLE, if you enjoyed the humour aspect of the PARKINSN list. The CARE list functions in much the same way except it is for our hard-working, long-suffering, blessed caregivers. It, along with others, works in conjunction with the PARKINSN in trying to fill the needs of the extended family of people who live with pd, either in ourselves or our loved ones. Subscribe to CARE if you need the privacy to discuss care giving concerns with other care givers. I am not sure of the number of 'spin-off' lists from this one since it started in '93. One of the first was a list about SDS...some folks involved in the care of people with this problem had subscribed to the PARKINSN list until they began their own. I'm not sure if it is still in use or not but there definitely was a need for it. There are also some language-specific lists, eg, the French list. It must be quite difficult for people whose first language is not English to understand what some of us write so these language-specific lists must be highly appreciated by their members. Last, but not least, I would like to offer a sincere apology and a thank you to Janet Paterson. Earlier this summer, when I was going to be away from internet access for over a week, I asked Janet if she would consider 'baby-sitting' the list until I came back. There is quite a bit of background work to do re list ownership and these things can't just be ignored. Janet kindly agreed to do this and, in usual Janet-fashion, gave it a whole-hearted effort. But, lately, she has felt that being a co-owner in many ways limited her freedom of speech on the list. Instead of reading the messages she sent as 'from Janet', they were read as 'from the listowner' and were perceived as having more 'weight'. At one point, Janet not only was going to give up helping with the list, but also the list itself....thanks for staying with us Janet and I am sorry you felt stifled.... As has been said many times before, since we can't see or hear each other, many written words are mis-interpreted. Was that written in an angry tone of voice? A pensive tone? An attempt to interpret what another has written? We all get angry at one time or another and say or do things we'd like to take back or 'rephrase'. Let's keep an open mind and an open heart for each other in our common goal of defeating pd and living well until the 'Day of the Cure'.
