Subject: CFP: Sewanee Mediaeval Colloquium

A reminder that submissions for the 2000 Sewanee Mediaeval
Colloquium are due by 1 October. PLEASE NOTE that this is not for literary
scholars only: we are interested on papers concerned with ALL aspects of
the world in which Chaucer lived -- political, religious, artistic, and
intellectual -- as well as with the author, his work, and his legacy in
literature and in modern criticism.

                         CALL FOR PAPERS
                SEWANEE MEDIAEVAL COLLOQUIUM 2000
                        31 MARCH - 1 APRIL 2000

THEME: CELEBRATING CHAUCER IN 2000: HIS WORLD, HIS WORK,
                        HIS LEGACY

                KEYNOTE LECTURERS:
                HELEN COOPER, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, OXFORD
                JOHN V. FLEMING, PRINCETON UNIVERSITY
                R. ALLEN SHOAF, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA

Submissions are invited for short papers (20 minutes) which are related to
the theme in any way. We envision sessions dealing with topics such as: the
political, social, religious and cultural life of fourteenth-century
England; MS production, the culture of the book, art and architecture of
fourteenth-century England and Europe; the Canterbury pilgrimage; all
aspects of Chaucer's literary work and its place within the English and
European literary traditions; Chaucer's influence on later writers; modern
Chaucer criticism.

Abstracts (approx. 250 words) should be submitted no later than 1 October
1999 and should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae. Papers accepted for
the Colloquium must be submitted in their final form, including footnotes,
by 20 February 2000, in order to reach commentators in good time.

THE SEWANEE MEDIEVAL COLLOQUIUM PRIZE will be awarded for the best paper

June 1998). The prize, worth $250, will be judged by the Colloquium
