Brief sudden irresistible sleep episodes have interested
PIE members lately because of a recent report about a
few Requip or Mirapex users falling asleep while driving
a car. The episodes described are not like feeling a bit
drowsy and looking for a place to stop and rest. Rather
they sound like narcolepsy, also called "absence siezure"
or "petit mal", the mildest form of a common inherited
siezure disorder that used to be called epilepsy. It's
estimated that about 125,000 Americans have narcolepsy
(say, about 1 per 2,000 people). Wouldn't surprise me at
all if those agonist-related cases represent people who
have an inherited susceptibility, that produces those
sleep episodes only if they are also taking one of those
drugs. Cheers,
Joe
