I used to think the generics were as good as the real thing. So when my
doctor prescribed Eldepryl, I accepted the generic Selegiline HCL. I took
this for two months along with a generic for Sinemet, and it seemed to
really help. These two months the Selegiline was from the same
manufacturer. When I had the prescription refilled, I received Selegiline
from a different manufacturer. I didn't pay much attention to this,
thinking a generic is a generic. But after taking the new pills for a
couple of days, they didn't seem to be having the same effect as the other
ones. I thought at first it was just my imagination, and took them for a
few more days. I decided then something was wrong.

I did a search on the internet for Eldepryl and Segegiline. The only thing
that seemed to be really different between the real thing and the two
generics were the filters - and the filters were also different between the
two generics.

At the risk of sounding foolish, I took the bottle back to the pharmacy,
and explained I didn't think it was working as well as the first one. I
told the pharmacist I didn't mind getting the generic, but wanted it from
the same manufacturer. I didn't want to be switching manufacturers every
time I got a refill. The pharmacist was really nice about it, and placed an
order for pills from the first manufacturer. He also noted in my records
what had happened. And he didn't charge me for the replacement.

This has changed my thinking on generics. After reading Janet Patterson's
post about her experience with generic Sinemet, I checked my prescription
and it was from Endo. Guess I'm not so sure I will accept a generic at face
value next time. (Sigh).
