Mike, My disability income case was complicated by the fact that I was attempting to go back to work part-time but I went February through September without an insurance payment my attorney didn't want a rejection and therefore agreed to waive the 90 day period while we got them some additional information. When I became eligible for Social security it went through without a hitch but it didn't help me since it was deducted from 2 of my policies (I had several fortunately) and actually reduced the amount that I got in total. I hope you don't have a coordination of benefits clause in your policy since it subtracts the amount of your SS benefit from your LTD benefit. If you do have such a clause I wouldn't be too prompt about filing for SS (if the insurance company gets the benefit rather than you.) I know the relief you feel as do many of the rest of the list a few of whom went through it with me several years ago or themselves.
