There are more than one, but the most often used is 1-methyl-4-phenyl-
1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). Its effect as a valuable "model" of
PD in lab animals was discovered when it resulted from a botched
attempt in a home lab to make synthetic heroin, and several drug users
in Berkeley took it by mistake. Langston's curiosity about the sudden
coincidence of similar victims, followed by some astute detective work,
led to the discovery. Cheers,
Joe
