THE HEART OF THE MICROSOFT CASE

Supported by the judge's finding-of-fact last week that Microsoft has an operating system monopoly (and has used it in ways that are anti-competitive, anti-consumer, and anti-innovation), the federal and state officials pursuing the case are now more convinced than ever that their most important job is to break up the monopoly itself. The attorney general from Connecticut said, "The case showed that Microsoft's abuse of its power in the operating-system market is endemic to its conduct, and any remedy has to deal with that."
