Dear Nita,

THe question you asked is so central-I'll do my best-
and I am sending this also to Patricia Ryan.

The Human Rights Commission process is not in
a court. It is not a framework in which lawyers can be
appointed, AS FAR AS I KNOW. Patricia Ryan's
staff can even send out a list of sympathetic lawyers--
and did--
but, NOT ONE of six or seven that I tried who are on that
list. as well as ten or twelve others, are willing to aggressively
attack the einhumanities that the City Lawyers have put me
through. Maine is a SMALL state, I am form away (born in
RHode Island) and I just don't know how to attract or
get legally-trained help to came forward to represent me PRO BONO.

There are all kinds of reasons--the most consistent one
I got was: "I DON't honestly know enough about Parkinson's
Disease to help you." I also am VERY upset because
I am having an increasingly difficult time being HEARD
on the phone. SO thank you for asking, NIta.

THe lack of good legal help is why I lost the Fact-Finding
investigation-there
were 2 POWERFUL lawyers and me, unrepresented, as
opposing parties. It is David and GOliath.

The whole process has been lopsided-the City sends
the Human RIghts Commission documents, and I spend
four MONTHS trying to figure out what they mean, let alone
how to respond in time.
Plus, there is the assumption that i am going to be just
fine. THere is NOT the understanding that my HOUSE is
on the line!! I also think that anti-gay feelings and
anti-Jewish feelings account for some of the reaction]
I am getting. But I am NOT out to show these , only to try to show
how the CIty treated me DIFFERENTLY. And , because
I am a well-known "white" civil rights activist- at the grassroots
level, I have a reputation, as when we vigiled outside CiTIBANK
for 18 months to protest their investments in South AFrica.
So the City lawyers, who represent the interests of the wealthy
banks and developers, not poor people like me, tell me that
they don't "Trust" me. Of course not. I oppose the big]
business interests.

If anyone knows differently- for Maine- PLEASE tell me.

I have filed a lawsuit against the CIty-which I still can
pursue, but again, no lawyer yet.

Suing a CIty is MUCH more difficult than trying to
establish a record of DISCRIMINAITON before a
Human RIght commission, in my humble opinion.

Lastly, NiTA, IS MY EXHAUSTION. It is my YOPD-
related lack of sleep, where off-periods are merging
with off-periods. I shudder to think of what my future
will hold. I just ask for help from God, one day at a
time.

Ivan
