In amateur radio, one who just listens to other people talk on the radio, but who does not get into the conversation is doing what the hams call "reading the mail". And this expression goes back way before computers and E-Mail. So I think that this expression is much more appropriate for one who does just that, reads the mail without jumping in and participating themselves. I don't think there is any chance that I could convince 100 million (or however many there are) people who use the Internet to change their way of referring to that practice.
