Dear list: Ivan responded on 11/22 @ 12:35:07 AM to a question asking for specifics of his problem. If you did not delete before reading, you noted that his problem is even deeper than he has been discussing because the tax bill which is the subject of his foreclosure is the 1997-98 tax bill and if he solves that he faces a similar problem next December with his 1998-99 tax bill ad infinitum ad nauseum. There have been a number of posts with solutions which could have merit. Suggestions have included bankruptcy, equity mortgage, reverse mortgage, obtaining a pro bono attorney to fight for him from one of the groups (ethnic, sexual preference) of which he is a member. No one has suggested that he take in a boarder to augment his income but perhaps that is also possible. While a number these might be possible, none seem particularly probable in the time remaining. So, I propose the following: that among 1800 members of this list there is more than enough financial muscle and presumably more than enough sympathy and perhaps even empathy to solve the problem for the short term, meaning for this year. That would give Ivan an entire year to solve next year's problem utilizing one of the extant suggestions or some other solution. If 145 of us sent $10, that would do it. I will start by contributing $25 and I would like to ask Barb or Janet by means of this e-mail if either of them would be willing to be the "collection agent" who receives the checks and mails them to Ivan once the drive is complete. I understand fully that I am probably violating some tenet of the list with this proposal and I don't plan to ever make a similar one again. I have, however, over time developed a certain comfort level with many people on the list and I feel reasonably certain that there are enough people who won't let ceremony or even some sense of outraged propriety stand in the way of assisting a fellow pwp who obviously needs the assistance. There but for the grace..... Paul H. Lauer
