Well, the *advantages* of the digest are simple. Instead of
getting dozens (hundreds? ;-) ) of individual messages a day, you
get a group of several (many ;-) ) two or three times a day. And,
if you belong to more than one mailing list, the digest will cer-
tainly keep you a bit more sane by minimizing the number of in-
coming messages in your "in box."
I currently belong to three mailing lists (it has been as many
as six :-/) and, for me, the digest is a life-saver. All the
"Subject: "'s are listed at the top. And, if something looks in-
teresting, I use my mail reader's search capability to search for
and read the message.
But, as Kathy said, if you are going to reply often the digest
can be cumbersome to reply/edit/send with. And, it is *much*
harder to follow a thread of conversation with.
