DBS has been around in the US for about 1 1/2 years authorized to be used
for tremor control when implanted in the thalamus. In Europe and much of
the rest of the world it is often implanted in the Globus Pallidum or the
Subthalamic nucleus bilaterally and provides significant symptom relief for
rigidity, freezing and dyskinesia. It has been done in the US on a limited
and trial basis and is likely to be approved for general use in early 2000.

I speak from personal experience as I have had the procedure. It can be a
godsend. Risk of stroke or other complication is about 3-7 %. I would
suggest searching our archives for further information as this has been
discussed previously.
