Dr. Snitch 10 Dec 99 Along with some other U. S. states, California requires doctors to report any patient whose physical or mental condition might, in the doctor's judgement, impair his driving safety. Doctors in California have generally refused to comply, for fear of losing the patient's confidence, as well as the responsibility for deciding just what constitutes a safe driver. But now the AMA at its recent annual meeting has decided to endorse the law and advise its members to comply. A patient could lose his freedom and independence, for example, merely by taking any drug having the ubiquitous label "may cause drowsiness", or even by passing some arbitrary limit of age.
