Rather than piggybacking the data on electricical current, it uses the magnetic field created by the electricity to guide a microwave signal that travels outside of the cables. William Stewart, Media Fusion's chief scientist, says the system can transmit multiple megabytes of data per second, compared with a transmission rate of about 1 megabyte per second via the electric current. Media Fusion plans large-scale testing of its system, using fiber-optic lines to feed Internet data to control centers at electrical substations, where it's then translated into microwave pulses that are sent to a user's power line modem.
