COMPANY FINDS MAGNETIC APPEAL IN USING POWER LINES FOR DATA

Electrical companies are still working out the kinks inherent in using power
lines to carry Internet data, but Media Fusion of Dallas, Texas, thinks it
has the answer. Rather than piggybacking the data on electricical current,
it uses the magnetic field created by the electricity to guide a microwave
signal that travels outside of the cables. William Stewart, Media Fusion's
chief scientist, says the system can transmit multiple megabytes of data per
second, compared with a transmission rate of about 1 megabyte per second via
the electric current. Media Fusion plans large-scale testing of its system,
using fiber-optic lines to feed Internet data to control centers at
electrical substations, where it's then translated into microwave pulses
that are sent to a user's power line modem. (New Scientist 25 Dec 99)
