A deeper understanding of writing: A reflection on advocacy, by Stephanie Bell
Guest editor: Holly Salmon

How do you describe the role of writing centres in higher education? I find that my efforts to articulate a narrative that moves beyond descriptions of programming and pedagogy are centred on advocacy and education about the nature of writing. What is good writing? This question has high stakes for higher education, and writing specialists located in writing centres have the expertise required to shape the answer.

Dear writing centre colleagues,

We are inviting you to complete a brief survey<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScqzzI06CegytV4Jy20sM2hezNLMqEzFSB-RaJsc_nsCK-gGA/viewform?usp=sf_link> that will help us capture our community’s responses to the occurrence of digital writing projects (blogs, presentations, wikis, podcasts, videos, etc.) across higher education. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes of your time.

Research in the US suggests that despite the increasing regularity of digital assignments across higher education, students reserve writing centre visits for traditional academic writing projects. We are wondering how similar the Canadian scene is, and whether the policies, programming, and pedagogy of Canadian centres have been modified or are

I did not make it to Columbus to be with Nan -- but did get there in time
to spend time with Abigail and Isabel, to write the obituary and
announcements for various groups, and to sit together and tell stories
about Nan, look at photos, and just treasure her memory. She was one of a
kind -- and a friend of some forty years. We will miss her wit and wisdom.

I too am saddened by the news of Andrea’s passing. I was lucky to have her as a supervisor during the time she was at UBC, and learned a tremendous amount from her during that time. She was the one who introduced me to the Inkshed community and another fine circle of friends and colleagues. The rhetoric community in Canada was lucky to have her as a member and we are all lesser for her loss.

Saturday's first blow was the news that Nan had died, followed quickly by Hurricane Dorian's wallop. Is that pathetic fallacy writ large?

When I met her I understood what Walter Pater said about a soul burning with a hard gem-like flame. But there was softness as well. I loved her.

Hello Anthony:

I'm living in New York on hiatus and have resumed writing the

I worked on the first Aboriginal Languages and Literacy project of its

Dear friends,

As some of you may know, Carl Leggo, whose last email about Inkshed is below, passed away last Thursday, March 7. Carl was diagnosed with cancer last summer, and had been through a variety of treatments over many months. His final weeks were spent pain-free in palliative care surrounded by family. Throughout, he was joyful, serene, even beatific. Those who knew him will grieve him terribly, but we can take strength from the peace he clearly felt right to the end.

I thought I should write and let Inkshedders know that Jim Reither died a week ago. He'd been ill for some years, so the death was not unexpected. He had been out of touch with most Inkshedders since his early retirement in the mid-nineties. He'd been living in Albuquerque for decades.

After the end of the first Inkshed conference -- an exhausting transformative experience -- I fell in with a dozen people who were having lunch and as I listened to the conversation from my place at the very bottom of the table I started to cry. Jim asked what was the matter, and I confessed that I wanted so much to belong to this community.
"You already do," he said.

Thanks for sharing this, Russ. I remember Jim, and some of the other Inkshed founding folks (yourself included), as true intellectual mentors as I was transitioning from a half-assed remedial writing teacher with an English Lit degree and no idea how to teach writing, to a real writing studies teacher and scholar. The writing community of the 80s and 90s owed him a great deal and he will be remedied fondly by all of us.

Thanks for letting us know, Russ. That's sad news indeed. I have a
wonderful memory of Jim at my very first CCCC--San Francisco in the early
1980s(!). In a very informal and genial way, he shepherded a group of us
walking from the piers all the way back to the hotel, including a stop at
Ferlinghetti's bookstore. (Does anyone else remember that?) This was my
first big conference! For me, Jim helped set the tone that I came to
associate with so many of our gatherings from then on: collaboration,
exploration, support, and fun.

Inkshed and Canadian Writing Centres

Margaret Procter retired in 2012 as University of Toronto Coordinator, Writing Support since 1994.

How does a country invent a new discipline? The answer for Canada would have to involve the organization commonly called Inkshed (otherwise the Canadian Association for the Study of Language and Learning). It brought university teachers together in person and online from 1982 to 2015 to discuss how students learn to use texts, write with their own voices, and interact to develop ideas. In the process, Inkshed gave Canadian writing-centre faculty a way to think about their particular kind of

The blog piece that Brian Hotson asked me to write for the WLN Journal

institution that was once central to Canadian writing studies.

I hope it will also lead people to the collection of newsletters and

It appears that there are still 200+ people on the CASLL-L list, even though for all practical purposes it's been rendered inactive. This email is directed to those who still have some interest in keeping the Inkshed legacy alive. I'd thought about trying to weed out the list, so as not to annoy those who don't, but I didn't want to make the judgments myself. Who knows who might care, and who might not? If this isn't of any interest to you, stop reading here: I haven't had time to write a short explanation.

A couple weeks ago, a graduate student at Brock U wrote and asked about an article I published a long time ago in the Inkshed newsletter. [Leggo, C. (2002). What is good writing? Grammar and my grandmother. Inkshed, 19(3).] The student and her classmates had been assigned the article for reading, but nobody (including the Brock U librarian) could find a copy. I, too, could not locate a copy online. So, I sent the original manuscript. I have no suggestions for technological support, but I hope that you are able to preserve the archive of CASLL and find

Let me try to respond to a number of emails in one, to avoid causing unnecessary RSI . . .

Doug says he thinks it's good to have the newsletters accessible, but says that's already happening: on the other hand, Carl says he couldn't find his own article in it, looking for it specifically. I think the issue is practical accessibility, and right now, where it is on the CASDW site, it's accessible but not exactly findable. It's like being on the library shelf but not in the catalog. I think that's the point Natasha makes, and Carolyn agrees with

Hold off on ordering shoes! I am gathering evidence to present to CIRA,

CASLL still owns the inkshed.ca domain until June 2019, though another

Thanks for bringing this up, Russ. Though I was only at two Inkshed gatherings, Inkshed provided me, professionally, grounding in academic writing and the academic writing community, at a time when the CWCA was struggling with its existence. The CWCA meeting at STLHE in 2012 had only 5 people in a small boardroom at McGill, two of which were Inkshedders. Theresa Hyland calls Inkshed the “grandmother” of both CASDW and CWCA.

Russ and Margaret,
Re. preservation, I agree with Brian that duplication of the archive is a
good strategy and that a Wikipedia page might work as one way to help
people find them.

At the U of A, the library has a digital archive initiative:

Open Access Institutional Repository ERA (Education and Research Archive)

ERA promotes research discovery and digital preservation services in an

UNB does, but it’s just for UNB faculty (annoying because many people – like me – came to STU on the understanding, sometimes the explicit condition, that we’d have access to UNB facilities). And yes, Toronto has one and said they’d be willing to accept my stuff – the problem was that as I looked at how it would need to be stored it was clear that the way my Website grouped and organized material

As increasing emphasis is placed by post-secondary institutions and employers on the importance of writing skills, this special section considers the gap between what writing instructors need to be effective and the supports currently in place, particularly in light of the disciplinary tensions between English departments and writing studies, the

I've just had my memory challenged -- I'm participating tomorrow in a sort of nostalgic reminiscence about the early days of IT at St. Thomas and UNB. As a way of pinning down some dates I went back looking for early Inkshed newsletters -- and realized they've been lost to link rot. As I poked around the Inkshed.ca Web site, I realized that, since last spring the surviving Shedders agreed that it was over, the Web site and its ancillary documents (mainly the issues of the newsletter and the archive of CASLL and CASLL-L) need to be converted into an

I've just been thinking of you all -- with thankfulness and many happy

transferring the newsletters at least (and possibly other items) to a

available here:

In her new introduction to that work, McLeod-Rogers reflects on the changes
in studies of difference since 1994 and how her work can inform current
studies of gender, genre, and method. As a reflective essay, it is worth a
read and I hope you'll give it a few minutes of your time.

Hi, all.

(I’m sending this message to both the CASLL and CASDW lists, in the hope of reaching all former Inkshedders. Apologies for duplications!)

The announcement Roger Graves recently sent out re the latest book from Inkshed Publications makes this a timely message . . .

This is the second year in a row without an Inkshed conference. None of our efforts to reboot and reinvigorate the conference in the years 2012 through 2015, though sometimes moderately successful as one-off meetings, have generated the collective commitment needed to truly revive Inkshed and keep it going. As a participant at the first Inkshed conference, a regular attendee for 13 years in a row, an Inkshed conference organizer (twice), an early Inkshed Newsletter editor, and a frequent newsletter contributor, this news makes me feel sad and nostalgic. The community was absolutely central to my development as a teacher and researcher. Dear Inkshed scholars and colleagues, you were my first academic

Dear fellow Inkshedders,
Like Russ and Anthony, I attended our first working conference in
1984. Inkshed has informed my teaching life ever since.
As nineteenth-century poetry specialist, I had suddenly been
transported to teaching "writing" in 1974. My national community at that
point was ACUTE (as it was then spelled), a traditional talking heads'
conference whose members viewed writing as a discrete skill, like riding a
bicycle. Once you got it, you got it.
I had no larger group to talk to, to question assumptions with, to
argue with, to work through half-baked ideas about real writing in real
contexts.

Russ Hunt not only helped start things happening in the 1980s, but also
kept them going through the next decades. One good idea he put into
action was the Inkshed listserv. For years, it was a lifeline for me and
others scattered across the country. He also created and maintained the
Inkshed website until 2011. Russ, I miss seeing you at conferences!

Greetings Katja:

Are any of these sessional positions distance learning?
That would interest me for two reasons: First, I am in New York
getting my feet back into the water after a long period of healing due
to injury that led to increasing legal blindness and will be able to
travel again perhaps in 2 years. Second, I am scheduled to begin
vocational rehab with assistive tehchology shortly. Third, this is
intended to permit me to return to my work in arts related education
and research - for I can read (listening), write (keyboarding) and
write drafts (the 'blurt' approach)

Moving writing centre work into student learning centres may decrease the quality and quantity of students' learning, but it does save money--at SFU, as I remember, undergraduate peer tutors replaced professional instructors to a significant extent--and if you measure only number of tutor-student interactions it can be made to look as as if one is "doing more with less."

Hi Rick and Kathryn,

You'll be glad to hear that our staffing model at the SFU Student Learning Commons with undergraduate peer tutors, graduate peer facilitators, and writing specialists allows us to address writing issues at the transactional and systemic levels, i.e. through individual consultations with students as well as by partnering with faculty to hone and assess writing assignments and classroom writing strategies. We are certainly interested in the number of tutor-student interactions as there's a large demand to meet, but we are even more invested in the quality of the learning that takes place. There are different models

I am awfully sorry, Katherine, but what's great about this article? Once
again, it completely ignores our discipline and anything that we know
about writing. Adding rubrics and checklists or models is not going to
result in better writing, and we know that. A lot of excellent writing
centres have been closed down, people fired, etc. I'm glad Boba was part
of this effort, but the report's advice to co-teach can be helpful only
if the institution supports it.

Hey Natasha,

It's great (ironically) I should have used 'scare quotes' because it confirms the 'problem' that the acquisition of disciplinary writing as the core activity of student learning at the university has been hollowed out despite high expectations and student services and a school of hard knock belief that motivated students somehow will acquire the disciplinary genres if they really want to (see some of comments)

Yes, Kathryn (and nice to converse again:-)

What unsettles me is that the study the report is based on has been funded --and we all know how few studies are being funded these days--and resulted in such a shallow and uninformed report. And its suggestions are not going to be useful, and there is a ton of literature that our colleagues have produced, which shows that the suggestions the report provides do not address the actual problem. And, as someone, who designed and taught in an engineering communication program, I'd like to note that stand alone "writing courses" that are

Hi Elaine,

I am glad your model addresses writing issues transactionally and systematically (which I take to mean by helping students understanding writing as a communicative process that needs to be adapted to readers and their contexts).

Bottom line, tho, the SFU administration decided to replace a Writing Centre staffed by instructors educated in writing & rhetoric with undergraduate peer tutors. I suspect instructors with undergraduate majors and/or graduate degrees in writing & rhetoric provide better quality instruction that undergraduate peer tutors (tho I'd certainly be interested if you have evidence to the contrary).

Hi Rick,

Well, the staffing is a combination of undergraduate student tutors, graduate student tutors, and writing specialists with advanced degrees in rhetoric, composition and linguistics. Not arguing at all that there aren't benefits to other approaches, am noting that our services are not without merit.

*Call for Papers for an edited collection: The Rhetoric and Discourse of
Oil*

Recent years have seen the rise of the “Energy Humanities,” which consider
cultures in terms of the energy sources that make them possible, energy
sources that tend to be invisible to those inhabiting a given culture. In *Oil
Culture*, for example, Ross Barrett and Daniel Worden argue that in
contemporary North America oil is largely secreted out of sight but, at the
same time, “the oil industry is as ubiquitous and necessary to contemporary
life as money” (xix). Or, as Ruth Salvaggio puts it in her essay

Looking ahead with a suggestion for the next conference gathering: as
talking comes before writing, has there ever been a conference theme
that explores language speaking skills and transfer of speech to text?
I mean, is writing (the embodiment of words) an integrative action in
language learning? Or a disintegrative one? Does the outcome depend on
what is the mother language of the learner. I mean, performance texts
were recognized as documents in the landmark legal decision known as
Delgamuuwk. Early legal writing is said to have been poetic. Is this
the reverse of text-to-voice which I am now learning

Hello Russ,

I haven't yet read Doug Brent's piece in the current Inkshed, but here's my thought: I've tended over the years to treat citation, through all the disciplines and year levels as a function of dialogue. One writes to establish a "conversational network" with one's interlocutor, providing overt signs in the text that it is, indeed, a conversation--the secondary material merging into an "audience." So my response to your query would be: students are not often experienced in connecting with an audience, partly (I wonder?) because various forms of instruction emphasize information content and form over rhetorical thrust.

My argument is basically that this is the principal reason, and that in fact most of the handbooks I've ever dealt with treat citation as a matter of property ownership and information transfer -- which is, in fact, what it is in most student writing situations.

I think Doug's piece has some implications for this -- but I'd
argue that it has to be more than a metaphor to be useful.

Hi Russ! It's great to hear that you will be at Inkshed this year! I look forward, as always, to your comments. I use the Brief Penguin Handbook by Faigley, Graves and Graves, as I feel that it supplies a lot of information about how to write as well as how to document and cite research. My own answer to the questions you pose are that students really don't understand how to read critically (see Chapter 12: Become a Critical Reader of Literature) and they don't understand the requirements of academic writing in the disciplines (see Chapter 10: particularly "What

Hi Doug,

Although I could hardly call myself a "dedicated Inkshedder," I teach an elective course in Engineering called "Language and Power", which is essentially a playful survey of rhetoric from Aristotle to modern. I use a variation of Inkshedding - perhaps a hybrid with free-writing - where students write index cards on a particular topic of discussion (today for instance, we were playing with Aristotle's topoi from The Rhetoric 2.23 ) and then pass their card to another student who comments, refutes, adds support etc. After a few "passes", the cards become rich points for discussion within small groups

I do a variant using Moodle -- on-line inkshedding, requiring online submissions before class. Rather than reading and marking interesting bits, students read and respond. I also do the traditional inkshedding from time to time, and always make sure that a compilation of the marked bits gets transcribed and posted. I like to do that early in the term when they are not sure yet who is in the class and how they think/write. The transcription (an Inkshed collage, I think Sargent and Paraskevas call it) always has a lot of hits on Moodle, but I think it's mostly as

Hi Doug,

I've been using Inkshed in its original and modified forms for years. I've used it on Moodle and in class with undergraduate engineering students, in my undergraduate classes on writing research, theory, and pedagogy, and in my graduate classes at MA and PhD level.

Recently, my PhD students and I had a chat how students' Inksheds in our class have developed since September (it's a two semester class) to become a genre of its own.

Hi Doug! What an interesting discussion. My use of inkshedding is a rather traditional one, but in an untraditional setting.

I use inkshedding with my senior international students who are in the second term of their academic writing course. Reading academic papers for these students is often a challenge. They are so engaged in what the text says that they find it difficult to think critically about the text. They start the first term with journaling and freewriting, but these forms often produce rote answers that say more about what the students think I want them to say than about what

This request just came in to the CASLL-L request address. I
don't know who would be in a position to grant permission --
other than Theresa, for the second piece, and I can't imagine
why they haven't contacted her directly. She's not hard to
find. Or why Penguin's going to India for permissions
outsourcing: maybe it's just a phishing expedition?

Russ,

This is not a phishing expedition. In past editions of the Brief Penguin
Handbook and the Little Penguin Handbook we have used articles from the
Inkshed Newsletter as samples in the MLA documentation chapter for how to
cite a web publication. This request is for using it again in the Little
Penguin Handbook. Originally our intention was to bring Inkshed to the
attention of writing instructors who adopted the book. I don't know how
well that has worked, but that was the idea.

Thanks for the clarification, Roger. You're right, it's hard to know whether the mention of Inkshed in past editions of the books had the desired effect of publicizing the association, but it seems worth continuing on the off chance—and in any case I think it's gratifying that our Newsletter is being used this way.

In his treatise "What is Inkshedding," Russ Hunt traces the origins of the
term "inkshed," noting that his favorite use of the term is Carlyle's: "With
no bloodshed . . . but with immense beershed and inkshed." (

Partially inspired by this turn of phrase, we have selected as the location

Dear Inkshedders:

It's almost the season to say welcome back to Fall term. There are times
when I'm very glad I'm retired. This blog post was mentioned in the New
York Times, meaning that it might get picked up elsewhere. I hope you
don't get it thrown at you without warning.

It turns up an old argument by summarizing a recent article in the
International Journal of English Education claiming that students revise
more in response to comments made by a "robo-reader" than to instructor
(TA?) comments. No examples or data are offered, only instructor
testimonials.

Of course, you know I was only twelve when I attended this conference! I have a folder of notes, including the following (partial) sketch of Anthony Adams: “He looks a bit like a harassed grocer, with an atmosphere rather redolent of stuffy warmth, slight oiliness, and a tinge of spiciness. The image is mostly physical – a round belly, wrapped in a vest, with maroon suspenders showing at his shoulders, and sleeves held up with sleeve bands.”
