Dennis alerted me to some issues they had routing support calls to the 1-800-387-5757 number. Apparently this has caused a little frustration for callers so if you have a support call that is still open and is not being resolved as expected, give Dennis a call or drop him an email and he will take care of it.

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- CERT(sm) Summary CS-97.01 February 26, 1997
The CERT Coordination Center periodically issues the CERT Summary to draw attention to the types of attacks currently being reported to our Incident Response Team. The summary includes pointers to sources of information for dealing with the problems. We also list new or updated files that are available for anonymous FTP from ftp://info.cert.org/pub/
The next scheduled nwadmins meeting will be at 10:30 AM this Friday in Rotman Centre (between Harbord and Bloor, east side of St. George) Room 147. I promise this is a nicer room than the last one... (easy promise to keep).
I don't have a formal topic list but there should be some discussion of the survey (which you ALL filled in and sent to David Shewchuk <[log in to unmask]> by now I am sure...)
Some users want some sample application source from an old SGI cdrom for another project. The source is in an inst format file. I can't install it because (1) it would overrride the newer version and (2) the *software* on the cd is incompatible with this machine or IRIX version. I can get around (1) to some extent by using the -r option to inst, although it seems to open a can of worms about prerequisites, but inst provides no apparent way of getting around (2).
Our SGI 4D340GTX died (power supply failure). We are going to dispose of the carcass. If anyone is interested in any parts, please call me.

The first Academic Advisory Committee meeting that I attended was held on January 22, 1997. The meeting agenda and information was sent to me late and I only received it on the morning of the day of the meeting so I was unable to supply any information to this group about the meeting or get any input from you for the meeting. Below is a summary of what happened at the meeting.
Hi. We (the UTCNS unix group) are now doing regular network sweeps of our own systems. A few months ago we spoke to Norman Wilson and offered to help revive the volunteer campus security sweeps. We're now in a position to invite other campus groups or departments to take advantage of the sweep service.
So ... if anyone is interested in having their systems swept, please feel free to contact <[log in to unmask]> to make the necessary arrangements.
> So ... if anyone is interested in having their systems swept, > please feel free to contact <[log in to unmask]> to make > the necessary arrangements. > > We've started with the sweep software originally gathered together > by Norman Wilson and Steve Kotsopoulos (with many thanks to both for > all their effort).
Hello. Just a quick follow-up. We've also copied over the sweeps web pages originally maintained by Steve and Norman. The new URL is http://www.utcs.utoronto.ca/sweep.html To anyone interested in having their systems swept: please try out the steps outlined under that URL. Thanks in advance. pk.
We've been using SONY data cartridges for our exabyte tape drive. Our supplier (Grand & Toy) is nolonger stocking SONY tapes. Anyone know where to get SONY tapes at a decent price. Or a good alternative to SONY tapes...
We always order data cartridges from Misco Computer Product Catalogue. We use Exabyte EY73083 (8mm 112M 2.5GB) $17.49/each, $16.27 for 20+
They have Sony too. Ask them put you in their mailing list they will send you the catalogue every month. Their phone number is (905)477-4055

If "ordinary" 8mm Sony tapes (as opposed to "data grade" ones) are OK (I've used them for years, without incident, though the collected folk wisdom advises otherwise), Honest Ed's is a good source. Last time I bought them they were around $7 each, lots cheaper than other standard sources. (I've occasionally found them even cheaper at various fly-by-night places on Spadina.)

The public discussion of the fallout from Dave Wortman's message is out of control; let's cut it off now, without worrying about who gets the last word, OK? If you want to keep talking or arguing or whatnot (as I do, in fact), let's stick to private e-mail among interested parties instead of broadcasting to a hundred mailboxes. ut-admins is too important a resource to waste on petty arguments.

Last night, someone connected to our ftp server and spent four hours fetching 1100 files. There is no obvious purpose behind the collection, unless it was to fetch everything easily in reach (though not every possible file was fetched).
I'd be interested to know whether anyone else has logs of unexpected fetches from the same place, or knows who they were. The calling host was weber.external.sdsc.edu; the caller identified himself to anonymous ftp as [log in to unmask] I've sent an inquiry to both organizations.

19193 files to weber.external.sdsc.edu for [log in to unmask] from ftp.cs.toronto.edu between 01:45:45 and now, and still going.

Dave,
Was the P.S. really necessary? The UTC Licensing folks consist of two people who work their butts off with limited resources. Instead of making comments about cluelessness, you might have offered to share this information with them as you have with us.

They may not currently have the educational license, but am quite sure that they are not clueless, and my experience with them is they are interested in hearing about new software licenses where there is sufficient interest to warrant it.

Derek, you want to castigate Dave, try another forum.
I have tried to keep quiet the last several weeks, but I am afraid, although I did hope otherwise, I still can be provoked. It's obvious that despite the fact that UTC has been proclaimed "dead", the unholy hate war between the "UofT" and UTCS/UTCC/UTC continues.
The people who work in central computing are as everyone else. Most are smart and dedicated, some by now are fed up and discouraged. There is no respect shown whatsoever to any of them. The ones who do not care, and don't deserve respect, strive and are promoted. The ones who do care are

Nobody seemed to have a genuine T1000 manual, though a number of people offered me the loan of manuals for other Telebit models. Terry Sanderson gave me the data I needed, though; quick-reference cards for a number of Telebit modems are available in Telebit's WWW server. Thanks to all who responded.
In the aftermath of Tuesday's mysterious zone transfers from netcraft.co.uk, and following up on a suggestion from Russ Sutherland, I changed my named.boot to admit zone transfers only from my own network and from the official U of T secondaries:
I picked up a cheap, but apparently working, Telebit T1000 at a surplus store recently. Anybody got a manual for that model that I can borrow to browse and copy? I have documentation for other old Telebit modems, so the general principles are clear; it is just the model-specific details I am after.

Last night someone in the UK did a zone transfer to fetch our name server data. This is not a normal name server operation unless the fetching system is one of your secondaries, and unless U of T has made new arrangements, this system isn't; it is, however, sometimes a sign of a bad guy trying to gather data to aid in an attack.
I was just wondering if any of you out there may know someone, or have first-hand experience building the X11R6.1 libraries.
I'm working on a Solaris 2.4 system. Everything seems to work fine, except that I get errors when trying to link the `xterm' executable. I have a feeling that I'm missing stuff from the terminfo or maybe the termcap files, OR maybe I need to link with the libucb.a library. The install notes mention something about the tic utility.
Some versions of FrameMaker come with a license server that allows ordinary users to change the permissions of any file on your system to allow reading and writing. The bad guys know about this bug. Allegedly it happens only if fm_fls is set-userid root, and the workaround until your vendor supplies a patch is to remove the set-userid bit from the permissions for that file.
expreserve, the helper program for vi that recovers the file you were editing when your connection dropped or the machine crashed, has been discovered to offer yet another opportunity for someone with an ordinary login on your system to overwrite any file on the system (and hence to become super-user as well). I'm not sure if this is a new botch, or just a rerun of an old one; expreserve has been serving up security holes since at least 1983.
In case you haven't seen this one - take a break and enjoy.
Mike.

A note on best-of-security reports a problem with mount and umount on `all current distributions of Linux': a local unprivileged user can execute arbitrary commands as super-user, by taking advantage of a buffer overflow bug (similar to the hoary old fingerd problem). The recommended workaround is to remove the set-userid bit from the permissions of /bin/mount and /bin/umount.
I will be leaving ECF at the end of August to take a position at Border Network Technologies, developers of the BorderWare Firewall Server.
I have enjoyed my time here, but look forward to experiencing the 'real world' in a software development position.

If you're using ssh, you should be aware that someone has recently figured out that if you can write in someone's home directory, you can set up a key for them, so that you can log in as them. This means that if ssh is installed on your system, an ordinary user who can write in someone else's home directory can also run commands as that user.

Has ntp.astro gone bonkers, or what? It seems to have a different concept of the time of day (by 100 seconds or so) from what various other NTP servers do. Have I been under the mistaken misimpression that ntp.astro was supposed to a reliable time source?
The following:

Yup, bonkers. It will be unreliable for another week or so. Trying to straighten out the software. There unfortunately isn't any way of testing out the software without "polluting" the environment.

Right, but for a long time I've been polling two servers (ntp.astro and madhaus.utcs). What I don't understand is the behaviour of the ntpdate command if two servers are queried, and the times reported differ by a lot: It turns out that all of the following ...

I'm not sure if it would be able to figure out which one was wonky if you only query 2 servers. I'd think you'd need at least 3 in order to figure out that one of them was bad.

There are two stratum 1 time servers on campus (ntp.on.canet.ca -- Lee preferred that people not sync to this one) and ntp.astro. There are a couple of stratum 2 servers that peer to both on and off-campus servers (ferut.sys and madhaus.utcs, I believe). At CDF, we sync with the two stratum 2 servers I

Correct w.r.t. madhaus. It gets its time from ntp.on.canet.ca. In addition it has the multicast option turned on. So if your machine has multicast support, and you are connected directly to the campus backbone you can configure the xntp daemon the listen to the chimes.
On a somewhat related multicast note, how many of you have users that are interested in the MBONE? I have a test router configured on the backbone that should allow any machine (assuming your kernel supports multicast) which is on a stub network (directly attacher to one of the campus backbone routers). What

The best on-campus secondary that I know of is ferut.sys; it makes an effort to get time from a bunch of primary and secondary NTP servers. Unfortunately it's currently running NTP version 2 instead of NTP version 3, although I may get a chance to update that.
I think it would be good to have another campus secondary that took time from a number of stratum 1 sources; the current ones I could spot only take time from two stratum 1 sources (ferut.sys currently talks to six stratum 1's and I want to increase it).

Dunno. I believe this is one of Russ Sutherland's testbeds.

Poor utoronto.ca. Their web servers won't be counted. <sniff!> :-) :-)
Here's what the perpetrators say (as I now see I should have guessed from their domain name).
It's for the Web Server Survey
http://www.netcraft.com/survey/
Every month, we publish the Netcraft Web Server Survey which is a survey of the number of web sites that we can find on the Internet, and the software used by these sites.

As for the CS Lab, they asked us *twice* about a whole bunch of domains. >From bay.cs:

Actually, we here at HSC are on the other end of the stick. We used to be sickkids.toronto.edu, but upon moving to ONet, we were forced (I am told) to go to sickkids.on.ca. Oddly, the OCI managed to keep oci.utoronto.ca.
For a number of reasons, mostly accessing U of T-limited services, it has become increasingly attractive to us to be tri-domained. We would like to come 'back in' to the toronto.edu/utoronto.ca domain, while not losing sickkids.on.ca, as everyone's business cards now read @sickkids.on.ca.

A rather short list, considering the number of zones at UofT. Are there any subdomains that do not respond with utoronto.ca requests?
