Hi everyone,
I just followed up on Elizabeth's reference and see that there are studies
reported on on-line work out of writing centres in short reviews at the
following site www.english.vt.edu/~1styear/bb/bedford.html
This is at Virginia Tech and the Bedford reference text on writing...which I
think someone mentioned at Inkshed.
I couldn't locate www.wpa.org but did a search for writing program
administration - getting ready for the big senate meeting today - thanks to
all of you who completed those writing centre surveys - useful support
information.
I will put the data on a spreadsheet at some point and make a copy
available.
Keep singing all you wonderful singers!
Wendy

Although I know of nothing that directly talks about classroom versus
on-line teaching, here are three references to studies that might give more
authority to Victoria's stance:
Prior, P. (July 1991). Contextualizing writing and response in a graduate
seminar. "Written Communication 8(3). 267-305.
Shi, L. (1998). Effects of prewriting discussions on adult ESL students'
compositions. "Journal of Second Language Writing" 7(3), 319-345.
Van Lier, L. (1996). Chapter 5; Motivation, autonomy and achievement.
"Interaction in the Langauge Classroom. (pp. 98-122). New York: Longman.
Hope this is useful, Theresa.
