My students all certainly know the 5 pe, the hamburger paragraph, and all
those other trivial ways that teachers have explained writing. My students
are also mostly savvy enough to understand that all such structures don't
work -- however, I'm continually surprised how often their writing still
falls into that kind of pattern even when it is not effective for their
purpose.
